Residents of Islamabad and several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were jolted on Monday evening when an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the region.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Center, tremors were reported in Peshawar, Landi Kotal, Lower Dir, Malakand, Mohmand, and nearby areas. People rushed out of their homes and offices in panic, though no immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received.

The epicenter of the quake was located in southern Afghanistan at a depth of 22 kilometers. Seismologists confirmed that the moderate depth was the reason the tremors were widely felt across northern Pakistan, especially in urban centers close to the Afghan border.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks. Rescue and relief departments have been placed on alert, although the situation remains under control.

This incident serves as another reminder of Pakistan’s vulnerability to seismic activity, given its position on the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Experts stress the importance of earthquake-resistant infrastructure and greater public awareness to minimize risks in the future.
