Punjab’s Wildlife Department has mounted a large-scale rescue effort to save vulnerable animals trapped by the ongoing floods, with dramatic rescues reported across multiple districts.

Nilgai Calves Rescued

In Bahawalnagar, Punjab Wildlife Rangers saved two orphaned Nilgai (blue bull) calves after they were separated from their mother during the heavy flooding. Officials confirmed that the calves are receiving round-the-clock veterinary care at the Bahawalnagar Zoo. “They are under special observation and being hand-fed until they can be reintroduced to a secure habitat,” a senior wildlife officer stated.

Deer and Lions Safely Evacuated

The operation extended beyond Bahawalnagar: eight deer were transported to emergency veterinary camps across flood-hit districts to ensure their survival. Meanwhile in Lahore, rescue teams evacuated six lions that had been stranded near the Ravi River, preventing a potential tragedy as floodwaters rapidly rose.

Wider Wildlife Protection Efforts

Authorities report that wildlife protection and rescue operations are continuing in Muridke, Narowal, Sialkot, and other affected areas. Teams are using boats, specialized cages, and tranquilizers to safely relocate animals from submerged forests and grasslands.

Crackdown on Illegal Hunting

Alongside rescues, Punjab’s wildlife department has intensified its crackdown on illegal hunting during the crisis. Dozens of individuals have faced fines and confiscation of equipment for attempting to exploit the disaster by hunting displaced wildlife. Officials emphasize that such activity endangers already stressed animal populations.

Looking Ahead

Heavy monsoon rains have inundated large swaths of Punjab, threatening both human and animal life. Wildlife experts warn that continued flooding may displace more species in the coming weeks. Authorities are urging local communities to report any sightings of stranded animals to the Punjab Wildlife helpline so rescue teams can respond quickly.

The successful rescues of the Nilgai calves, deer, and lions highlight the importance of coordinated wildlife protection measures during natural disasters, reminding the public of the shared responsibility to safeguard Pakistan’s diverse fauna.
