Beijing — Pakistan and China on Thursday signed investment agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth a total of $8.5 billion. The announcement came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Beijing, where he held high-level meetings with the Chinese leadership to strengthen bilateral ties.

Wide-Ranging Agreements

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the agreements cover multiple sectors including agriculture, electric vehicles, solar energy, healthcare, chemicals, petrochemicals, iron, and steel. These projects are expected to inject significant foreign investment into Pakistan’s economy while boosting industrial collaboration and technological advancement.

A Step Toward Economic Transformation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the deals as a vital step toward reshaping Pakistan’s economy.

“If we succeed in implementing these projects effectively, they will serve as a ‘Long March’ for the economic development of both nations,” he remarked.

The agreements include $1.54 billion in joint ventures and $7 billion worth of MoUs, representing one of the largest investment packages signed between the two countries in recent years.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

Beyond economic cooperation, reports from Chinese state media highlighted that both countries also agreed to deepen their partnership in security and defense cooperation, vowing to take joint measures in counter-terrorism and regional stability.

Looking Ahead

The signing of these agreements underlines Pakistan and China’s commitment to expanding their strategic partnership through large-scale investments, infrastructure development, and enhanced cooperation. With billions of dollars set to flow into Pakistan, the deals are expected to provide momentum for long-term economic stability and stronger bilateral relations.
