Lahore — Acting on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister, the provincial Food Department has officially notified the new procurement price of wheat at Rs. 3,000 per maund across the province.
Why the Decision Was Taken
According to a spokesperson for Price Control, artificial price hikes in the open market — largely driven by speculative paper trading — had been destabilizing the wheat market. To curb profiteering and hoarding, the government has set a uniform official rate for procurement.
The spokesperson further emphasized that wheat purchased at cheaper rates cannot be used for illegal stockpiling or unfair profiteering, warning that strict action will be taken against violators.
Flour and Roti Prices Announced
Alongside wheat pricing, the Punjab Food Department has also issued a notification regarding flour and roti rates:
-
A 100-gram roti cannot be sold for more than Rs. 14.
-
A 10-kg flour bag will be capped at Rs. 905.
-
A 20-kg flour bag will be capped at Rs. 1,810.
Additionally, the government has made it mandatory for all flour bags to carry complete labeling to ensure transparency and effective monitoring.
Ensuring Market Stability
The move is expected to stabilize wheat prices, safeguard consumers from artificial inflation, and ensure affordability of essential staples such as flour and bread across Punjab.
