Lahore (September 10, 2025) — The Punjab government has announced a significant step toward labor welfare by officially increasing the minimum wage to Rs. 40,000 per month. The decision was confirmed through a notification issued by the Labour and Human Resource Department, marking a major development in labor rights across the province.
New Wage Structure
Under the revised notification, the minimum wage applies to all adult and adolescent workers employed in industrial and commercial establishments. The wage structure is as follows:
Monthly Wage: Rs. 40,000
Daily Wage: Rs. 1,538.46 (for an 8-hour shift)
Hourly Wage: Rs. 192.31
Employers may deduct limited allowances for food, transport, or accommodation, but only with mutual agreement between workers and management.
Ensuring Equality
The notification emphasizes wage equality across genders, ensuring that both male and female workers receive the same minimum wage. Importantly, the government has clarified that existing higher wages cannot be reduced, safeguarding employees already earning above the new minimum threshold.
Broader Implications
This move is expected to improve the lives of millions of workers while increasing transparency in the labor sector. However, industrial representatives have voiced concerns over the financial burden on small and medium businesses, warning of possible challenges in compliance.
The Punjab government maintains that the decision reflects its commitment to protecting worker rights, reducing wage exploitation, and aligning with international labor standards.
